Last Time
In the last lesson, we learned about the various engineering careers, and how they compare to the general economy. Now, we will start practicing some basic engineering skills, starting with mechanical assembly. First, though, we need to become familiar with the parts and tools available in the kits.
Evaluation
For this lesson, you will be evaluated in the following ways:
- The quality of your notes, as assessed by an online quiz.
- Your ability to assemble a simple car.
Watch Mr. Stevenson Do It/You Do It
Before beginning, create a section in your Notebook for today's lesson. There are specific parts to these kits that need to be used carefully. Mr. Stevenson will go through the major parts you need to be familiar with. There is also a video for anyone who misses class or who needs additional reinforcement. Please watch the video to see how to properly support an axle, tighten bolts and nuts, etc. You should take notes about how to use specific parts AND ABOUT WHAT NOT TO DO.
We Do It
We will briefly review the different tools and parts as a class.
You Do It Together
Now, let us use the VEX components to build a simple car. This car must have at least 3 wheels, and should NOT be identical to what Mr. Stevenson made in the video. You will work with your shoulder partner. You will have twenty minutes, while I come around and help. You can use any NON-ELECTRONIC parts.
You Reflect
Record this reflection in your Notebook: what mistake do you think you are most likely to make that can damage the VEX supplies, and how can you avoid it?
